So you’ve just planned a great expedition into the unknown but you don’t know what gear you will need. If you are still slightly unsure exactly what you need for you next expedition then there are a few types of camping equipment to bear in mind. The aim of this article is to give you and idea of what you should be looking for when it comes to the essentials of any camping trip or expedition. Although having said that your exact requirements will of course vary depending on the type of environment you plan to find yourself in.
I strongly believe that the most important bit of kit to get right is the sleeping bag. It is the basic piece of kit that you cannot live without. Now it is up to you if you need a goose down filled sleeping bag to keep you warm or a thinner synthetic bag if you are going somewhere a little warmer.
Second the second bit of kit you want is a tent to keep you sheltered from the elements. Again there are a few options here when it comes to choosing a tent. Tents are graded by their ability to function in all types of conditions. A four season tent will be able to keep you dry and sheltered in the harshest conditions, whilst a single season tent is only fit for use in the warm summer months.
Of course you need to be able to carry your equipment effectively over all kinds of terrain. And this is why a good quality rucksack will come in handy. This is one piece of kit that I would advise spending some extra cash on. As you will be spending a long time carrying your gear around with you it is worth your while investing some time and money in getting a bag that is right for you. Additionally you will want your bag to have easily accessible pockets to store water on the go, a waist strap to take the load off your shoulders and a waterproof cover in case you get out when it’s raining.
